MILFORD – Downtown Milford was closed to vehicle traffic for several hours Thursday afternoon after a tractor-trailer hit a low-hanging phone wire at the intersection of Nashua and School streets. Barricades were set up at Nashua and Clinton streets and at South Street and Union Square. However, pedestrians were free to pass since there was no electrical danger, said Milford Police Officer Rich Addonizio, who was stationed in front of ATECH Automotive on Nashua Street. The accident happened sometime after 3 p.m., when a Ross Express delivery truck came up School Street and made a left turn onto Nashua Street. The truck driver said he drove the route all the time and something must have changed with the wire, Addonizio said. The traffic lights at the intersection were turned off and had to be removed, the officer said, because they were pulled down with the wire – “a sort of domino effect of issues.” – KATHY CLEVELAND
