Trial set to begin for man accused of organizing beating of ex-wife in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH - A Massachusetts man appeared in court Tuesday after allegedly orchestrating his ex-wife's death by having a family member beat her with a baseball bat in Portsmouth in 2013.
Both sides met in Rockingham Superior Court for a pretrial conference.
Hubert Hartley, 43, of Middleborough, Mass., is facing charges of accomplice to first-degree assault for allegedly directing his nephew, Terrence Hartley, to a house where ex-wife Janice Hartley and her boyfriend, Samuel Chouinard, slept in Portsmouth.
Hartley allegedly told his ex-wife that he would arrange for her to be killed by staging a car accident.
“Hubert Hartley attempted to aid a Terrance Hartley in committing the offense of first-degree assault by providing Terrance Hartley with a location-slash-address of Janice McCain Hartley," said Jennifer Fenfler, the court clerk as she read the charges aloud.
Opening statements are expected to given Wednesday at 10 a.m.
