DERRY- A day after a Rockingham County Judge’s ruling ordering the Derry Town Council to hold a special election over the budget, Council Chair said he Thomas Cardon was surprised and disappointed.
“I think the tax payers of Derry lost yesterday,” Cardon said.
Cardon is one of four who voted to approve massive budget cuts in the spring.
“We did what we believed in and what we thought was right for the town of Derry, that was to lower taxes, and I disagree with the ruling,” Cardon said.
The ruling states the councilors must schedule a special election for residents to vote on the budget.
Outraged over cuts to police, fire, public works, human resources, and the loss of a fire station, a group gathered hundreds of signatures to petition the council. When that was ignored, they raised $10,000 to take the council to court, and they won.
One of names on the court filing is former Town Councilor Neil Wetherbee, he says he still doesn’t feel their voices are being heard.
“No, no I mean we won't be until there's an election,” Wetherbee said.
Residents speaking out at Tuesdays meeting have mixed reviews of the ruling.
“I personally would vote to continue this to Supreme Court,” said one man.
”You may win the special election, you may not, but this has wasted enough time, money and community wellness, it’s time to be leaders put the circumstance away and stop and fix this,” said another resident.
According to the judge’s ruling, the council cannot petition, there must be a special election scheduled before September 30th.
There’s a meeting this Thursday at 6pm to discuss the judge’s ruling.
