Tilton auto store accused of 'torturing' pet snapping turtle, owner and employees disagree

TILTON — A woman claims an 18-year-old snapping turtle is the subject of animal cruelty after seeing him confined in a store aquarium.

Hillarie Goldstein, of Franklin, recently visited the auto store Camaro Heaven and claims that the turtle, "Shellhe," is being "tortured" since he's unable to move beyond bobbing up and down in his tank, according to the Laconia Daily Sun.

Chuck Drew - the owner and operator of Camaro Heaven - claims to have saved the large turtle when he was a hatchling. In his opinion, the turtle would have died without his help as the turtles were found near the side of a road.

A conservation officer at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Chris Brison, says the turtle is in good health and there are no regulations against having a snapping turtle as a pet.

Shellhe is now a foot-long turtle, residing in a 70-gallon tank at the pet store. He is fed crab legs every morning and is even joked to eat as well as the staff, said Joe Chase, an employee.
