Three people critically injured in early morning rollover on I-93 in Salem
SALEM - Three people were critically injured after the SUV they were riding in went off the road and rolled down an embankment along Interstate 93 early Sunday morning.
State police say they responded around 5:30 a.m. and found the Ford Expedition on its roof with three people inside off the southbound side of the highway.
All three occupants had life-threatening injuries. The driver was flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital. One of the passenger was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital and then flown to Tufts Medical Center. The second passenger was taken by ambulance to the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass. and then transported to Massachusetts General.
The identities of the three victims are being withheld until police can notify families.
Police say it appears the SUV was traveling south approaching the state line when for unknown reasons, the driver lost control and crashed through several feel of guardrail before rolling multiple time down an embankment and coming to rest against a cluster of trees.
