Three-alarm fire in Somersworth claims life of one man

SOMERSWORTH - A man has died after fire struck an apartment building at 86 South St. on Friday night.

Firefighters say they arrived on the scene and learned a man was trapped on the second floor. They pulled him out and called an ambulance, but efforts to revive him were not successful.

Ten people lived in the building and the other nine did make it out safely. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the state fire marshal was on the scene Friday night.

Firefighters say the call came in just before 6 p.m. and quickly progressed to a three-alarm fire, requiring mutual aid from crews as far as Maine. The building was heavily damaged.

The identity of the man who died has not been released.
