Think you want a tiny house? Businesses offer a tryout first

The Associated Press

CROYDON — More businesses are tapping into the tiny house trend, letting customers try out the downsized lifestyle before diving in.

A company started by Harvard students is renting out houses of only 160 square feet in New Hampshire to give customers a test run of tiny living. Called Getaway, the business has drawn visitors from afar who spend a few nights to help decide if they'll buy a tiny house of their own.

It joins other rental options, like a tiny house hotel in Portland, Oregon, and vacation rentals listed online.

Backers of tiny houses say the movement is growing, and it's been the subject of TV shows and documentaries. Industry experts say it's hard to pinpoint numbers, but data indicate that tiny house sales have stayed level in recent years.
