'Things like this don't happen,' says Claremont resident about shooting

CLAREMONT — The Attorney General's office is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting. Few details are being released at this time, but neighbors tell NH1 News this is something they never imagined would happen right in their backyard.

People waking up Sunday morning on Congress street were in shock as they learned about a police-involved shooting in their neighborhood.

"You hear it on the news in the big cities but you live in a small town and you just don't, things like this don't happen" said Ellen Byron who lives a few houses down from where the incident happened.

According to the Attorney General's office, police were called to a home on Congress street just before 5 a.m. 25-year-old Cody Lafont was fatally wounded during a confrontation with police. One neighbor said the sound woke her up out of a dead sleep.

"It was very distinct, I heard three shots right in a row" said Byron.

"Some kind of disturbance went off with the police" said Dale Giles, a neighbor who says he didn't know Lafont.

The Police department was not able to comment on how many officers were involved. The AG's office was tight-lipped about what lead up to the shooting. Those who live on this street say it's a nice part of town, the shock of what happened in the middle of the night leaving some on edge.

"I didn't know if someone was going around the neighborhood shooting...I opened the door a few times then I shut it and locked it because I was afraid if there was somebody with a gun" said Byron.

"Nothing like this goes on. We might have an occasional car that gets opened up because someone or somebody left unlocked and the glove box gets riffled through, but that happens all over town" said Giles.

In the wake of other police-involved shootings around the country, neighbors are not jumping to conclusions and want more information about the incident.

"Used to be the police are respected organization in the community...I think there's this broad brush that paints the entire police occupation in a very bad way" said Giles.
