These two past presidents did it all politically

These two men served as vice-president, governor, in Congress and in the U.S. Senate before becoming president:

Andrew Jackson was vice-president when Lincoln was assassinated and became president then.

John Tyler was vice-president when William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia and became president then.

Neither of the two would go on to run for re-election to the presidency and many historians consider these two among the most inept presidents in our history.

But no one could argue they lacked experience -- both had lengthy careers serving as governors of their states (Tennessee and Virginia respectively) as well as in the Senate, Congress and as vice-presidents.
