The Latest: Holding wins North Carolina incumbent clash

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The Latest on U.S. House primaries in North Carolina (all times local):

8:30 p.m.

North Carolina's Republican U.S. Rep. George Holding has won the only congressional primary between incumbents this year, defeating Rep. Renee Ellmers.

Holding beat Ellmers and doctor Greg Brannon on Tuesday by a wide margin in a redrawn North Carolina district that includes much of the territory that elected Holding before.

The final weeks of the race became a feud on the airwaves over conservative credentials, with heavy spending by the incumbents and more than $1 million from outside groups attacking Ellmers.

It was the first time two sitting members of Congress have run against each other since 2012.

Holding is expected to have a strong chance of winning the Republican-leaning district in the November general election.

The race was set up by court-ordered redistricting in February that moved Ellmers' 2nd District to the north and east, absorbing much of Holding's old 13th.

Two Republican U.S. House members from central North Carolina are fighting for their political lives competing for the same seat.

Tuesday's primary in the 2nd District between Republicans Renee Ellmers of Dunn and George Holding of Raleigh marks the first time two sitting members of Congress have run against each other since 2012. Cary obstetrician Greg Brannon is also in the race.

The primary is occurring after federal judges in February struck down two districts as illegal racial gerrymanders. The state legislature redrew parts of all 13 districts in the state and delayed the March primary. Holding was drawn out of his current 13th District and decided to run against Ellmers in the 2nd District.

Voters overall are choosing nominees in 11 districts Tuesday. Turnout is expected to be extremely low.
