The 1938 storm hit during high tide on September 21, 1938. The Category 3 hurricane slammed the Long Island and Connecticut coast and surrounding areas, causing massive flooding. In total the hurricane was blamed for 564 deaths and over 1,700 injuries.

Boston measured sustained winds of 121 mph, with gusts of 183 mph. Nearly 9,000 homes and businesses were destroyed and over 15,000 damaged. A total of about 6,000 boats were destroyed or damaged.
