DERRY - With the Powerball numbers at a sky-high $900 million by Saturday, a Derry woman suggested people assemble a pool to try and win the big bucks. Over 800 of her friends and neighbors responded.
Jennifer Lague believes in the power of community, and a few years ago, she started a Facebook page called "Bringing Derry Together."
"It's a very community driven page, where people can ask questions of each other," Lague said about the page.
With the Powerball winnings rising to a record level, she found a new way to bring Derry together this past week when she posted a message proposing they pool their money for the lottery.
"When I saw that the jackpot had gotten up to $400 million, I said, wouldn't it be fun to start a pool...I thought maybe it would be about 40 or 50 people. Never thought it would be like this."
More than 800 people responded, sending in money for the first pool. Now she guesses she has more than 1,200 participants for the second pool. With this big of a turn-out, she knew she had to keep careful records.
"I have a CPA [an accountant] lined u;, I have an attorney lined up that I have been speaking to, to make sure I am offering full disclosure" she said..
Her rules are simple though: you have to be at least 18 and participants are limited to one entry. Any money that is won, is spread and shared throughout the entire group equally.
"It's not about winning. Winning money is great, but it's about this, you know -- what's happening here right now," she said of the community coming together.
"It's a lot of work but it's worth it, you know. Whether we win or lose, it's brought the community together which is what "Bringing Derry Together" is all about."

The drawing Saturday night did not result in a winner -- the jackpot is now listed at $1.3 billion.
