Testing of Seabrook concrete under question by feds

As the process to renew Seabrook Station's license to operate progresses, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has questions its owner regarding testing of concrete used in construction at the plant.

According to the Eagle Tribune, the NRC said it will not approve the license extension request by NextEra Energy Seabrook until it is convinced the plant’s owner can demonstrate it has developed a long-term plan to address alkali-silica reaction as the plant ages.

ASR is a condition that can deteriorate concrete over time. It is a condition that can be found in bridge and dams. Seabrook is the only nuclear power plant in the country that has reported the condition.

A plan for testing the condition of the plant's concrete is taking place at the University of Texas.
