Temps drop, roads freezing, drivers urged to be careful

CONCORD - Rain and falling temperatures have conspired to make numerous roads north of Concord icy, catching some drivers by surprise.

Bill Boyton of the state Department of Transportation says message boards on the highways are now warning of the potential for black ice conditions. Route 10 in Lebanon has closed near the Wilder Dam because of ice, he said.

Route 25 in Rumney also is closed after weather conditions caused accidents on the highway.

Boynton said Interstate 89 from Bow to the Vermont border is considered dangerous in spots. DOT crews have been called out to start treating the roads, but drivers are urged to be cautious as temperatures that hovered just above freezing are now starting to drop those few degrees necessary to create ice, he said.
