Teenager suffers head injury in fall near Lake Winona

NEW HAMPTON - A teenager hiking near Lake Winona on Saturday had to be carried out after he suffered a head injury falling 20- to 25-feet from a ledge.

The 16-year-old was hiking with friends heading up a very steep path to get to a viewing area above the lake, according to firefighters.

After he fell, it took rescuers about 45 minutes to hike in to reach him. Involved in the rescue were conservation officers from the state Fish and Game Department and crews from Meredith, New Hampton and Ashland fire departments.

The youth, who was conscious when they reached him, was carried down the trail and taken to Lakes Region General Hospital.
