CONCORD – It was a slow week in politics, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but regardless, there was enough to choose from to put out our NH1 News politics quotes of the week.

And former Sen. Scott Brown and Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas make our first edition.

In an interview in his city hall office overlooking Elm Street, the mayor of the Granite State’s largest city told NH1 News that the budget is one of his top concerns right now, and that his message to state government leaders in Concord is not to “downshift any more costs to us.”

Asked if he’s brought up his concerns with fellow Republican and Governor-elect Chris Sununu (who defeated Gatsas in September in a multi-candidate GOP gubernatorial primary field), Gatsas said “I called to congratulate him when he won. And then again he called me about a week later and said we need to sit down and chat. And certainly I said to him ‘you’re going to hear me loud and clear if there’s any downshifting from Concord to the local communities because we can’t afford anymore’.”

The day after speaking with Gatsas, NH1 News interviewed Brown, who’s a top contender to become President-elect Donald Trump’s secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Brown, who represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate from 2010 to 2013, moved his residency to New Hampshire three years ago. He launched a GOP challenge in 2014 against Democratic incumbent Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, narrowly losing to her in that year’s general election in one of the most high profile contests of the cycle.

Asked about the possibility of a full service VA hospital in the Granite State, Brown said “it’s something that when I ran for the U.S. Senate, it's been something that's been promised in the past by people and it hasn't been delivered. You know if I’m the head of the VA and I'm living in new Hampshire, it's certainly something I’m going to be considering. But with respect we need to get cooperation from the federal delegation as well as the state partners.”

The senior member of that soon to be all Democratic delegation is Shaheen. Asked if he can work with the delegation, Brown answered “this isn’t about me. This isn’t about Donald Trump. It’s about our veterans. Once again, with respect, if our federal delegation doesn’t recognize that, then that’s up to them. It’s about our veterans. And they come first. It transcends any politics. Yeah I ran, and I lost. Big deal. Life goes on. But for some people, even if they’ve won it doesn’t go on. They kind of hold grudges and I’m hopeful that we, I’m not saying that that’s the case here, but I’m saying that we need to transcend that and focus on how we can do it better.”
