SUV rolls into Nashua River after driver drops lit cigarette on lap and jumps out

NASHUA — A man dropped a lit cigarette into his lap, causing him to jump out of his SUV, which then rolled into the Nashua River.

The 2016 Dodge Journey rolled into the water at the Mines Falls boat ramp behind Stellos Stadium at 11:20 a.m. on Monday and sank about 75 feet from the shore. The Nashua fire department activated a dive team to confirm that no one else was in the vehicle.

One diver managed to attach a cable to the underside of the vehicle using a Nashua Fire Rescue boat. This would quicken the removal, and decrease the chances of hazardous materials leaking into the river.

The vehicle was removed in an hour and half of the incident, without any hazardous leakage.

There were no injuries involved.
