PORTSMOUTH — A suspicious fire at Prescott Park shut down one of the piers.
Police arrived just after 5 a.m. on Tuesday to find firefighters already on scene battling a fire. The fire burned a large hole into the pier, causing damage to the end of it closest to the water.
For safety reasons, the Prescott Park manager closed down the pier and it remains blocked off to pedestrians. How the fire started was not clear, but police say they have reason to believe it's suspicious.
"At this time it looks like there is no other way that the pier over a body of water could have started than intentionally," said Sgt. Eric Kinsman.
It's unclear when this pier will be repaired and re-opened to the public.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
