Suspect arrested after Laconia hostage situation arraigned, held on $50,000 cash bail


LACONIA — The Laconia man arrested during an assault barricade situation was arraigned in Belknap on Wednesday and is facing seven charges, including an additional drug charge.

James Cunningham, 60, is charged with two counts second degree assault, domestic violence, domestic violence assault, criminal threatening, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled drug.

The incident began as a possible hostage situation, when police received a call from Cunningham's residence at 223 Weirs Blvd. in Laconia. The call came from a female just before 8 a.m., who said she had been assaulted and wasn't allowed to leave the residence.

Shortly after, police were able to assist the victim out of the house through a rear window. However, Cunningham refused to leave.

Cunningham is being held on $50,000 cash bail, or $200,000 corporate surety. He is due back in court on Dec. 22 at about 1:15 p.m. in Belknap Superior Court.
