Students can't tell the difference between real and fake news, study says
Growing up with social media sites, preteens and teens often can't identify fake news on their own, a new study showed.
Stanford University surveyed 7,804 students from middle school through college to determine if they could evaluate the accuracy and trustworthiness of what they find online.
Within this study, 82 percent of middle-schoolers could not distinguish between an ad labeled "sponsored content" and a real news story on a website.
The study also found that students judge the credibility of newsy tweets based on how much detail they contained or whether a large photo was attached, rather than on the source.
