Steinhauser: What John E. Sununu thinks about Mike Pence
NH1 News Political Director
CLEVELAND – John E. Sununu isn’t changing his mind about Donald Trump, but he tells NH1 News that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s choice of Mike Pence as a running mate “will certainly help the ticket.”
NH1 News spoke with the former senator from New Hampshire on the streets of Cleveland Sunday evening as Sununu and former Granite State attorney general Tom Rath were headed to a dinner with Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Sununu, who served with Kasich in Congress nearly two decades ago, was a top adviser to the Ohio governor’s 2016 GOP presidential campaign. Both Sununu and Rath are attending the Republican National Convention as pledged delegates for Kasich.
Asked about Trump’s naming the Indiana governor and former congressman as his running mate, Sununu said “I think Mike Pence brings a lot to the ticket. I served with him in the House. He’s sharp. He speaks directly about conservative issues. He’s got great governing experience in Indiana.”
“I don’t think at the end of the day the vice presidential picks make a big difference, but I think Mike Pence is the kind of person who can lead, who can be effective, who will certainly help the ticket across the country,” Sununu added.
