Steinhauser: Renee Plummer gives Jeb Bush good grade

CONCORD – Renee Plummer says Jeb Bush “absolutely” won over some hearts and minds Wednesday, when he spoke and took questions from a large group of Seacoast business leaders.

“He’s strong, he’s intelligent, he was answering great questions,” said Plummer, an influential Seacoast business leader and GOP activist.

Plummer should know. So far this year she’s hosted more than a half-dozen of these events with presidential candidates or likely contenders.

The gathering was Bush’s first stop during a two-day swing through the first-in-the-nation primary state.

“I saw it on people that I know that are big supporters of the Republican Party, not realizing that he was as good as he was. I spoke to a few of them and they though he was terrific,” Plummer said.

Compared to the other half-dozen 2016 White house hopefuls who’ve been invited to gatherings, Plummer said Bush is “above average.”

Plummer eventually endorsed former Utah Gov. and former U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman in the 2012 race for the GOP nomination. She says she’ll endorse again this cycle, sometime in October most likely.

As for Bush, Plummer said that “today he became presidential.”
