CONCORD – Score three big conservative endorsements for Republican Ted Cruz.
NH1 News confirmed Tuesday that former New Hampshire House Speaker and current Rep. Bill O’Brien, Executive Councilor David Wheeler, and former U.S. Sen Bob Smith are backing Cruz, the U.S. senator from Texas who was the first of the major GOP contenders to launch a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
O’Brien, Wheeler, and Smith are expected to make their announcement Wednesday morning at a news conference at the Legislative Office Building in Concord.
While the impact of endorsements has long been debated, in a large field of candidates, they could make a slight impact. As of now, six major names in the Republican Party have announced their presidential bids, with more than a dozen other contenders seriously considering White House runs.
O’Brien and Smith backed former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the 2012 nomination battle, with Wheeler staying neutral.
The endorsements were first reported by WMUR.
Cruz has made two trips to the first-in-the-nation primary state since he launched his presidential campaign on March 23, and as first reported by NH1 News, he returns to the Granite State May 29-31.
