State trooper assaulted during DWI arrest

DURHAM - A state trooper was assaulted by a Hampstead man late Friday night during a traffic stop.

Trooper Michelle Montville stopped Christopher St. Onge, 22, on Main Street in Durham when his vehicle crossed over the white fog line and the centerline into oncoming traffic.

Montville performed field sobriety tests on St. Onge and then told him she was going to arrest him for Driving While Intoxicated.

According to a prepared statement by state police, St. Onge punched Montville in the face. Montville defended herself, but St. Onge managed to escape.

State police, Durham police and University of New Hampshire police searched for St. Onge and arrested him Saturday morning. He is charged with felony escape, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, driving while intoxicated, transportation of alcoholic beverages and other motor vehicle related charges.

Montville was treated and released by Durham Fire and Rescue at the scene.
