State House to be open the next 3 Saturdays for tours

CONCORD - The State House opened for the first time on a Saturday to give tours.

"I think it's quite unique, that this is the oldest continuous operation capital in the united states. That's something had to replace." said Nick Rockers of Jefferson City Missouri.

Nick Rockers and his wife, Rose, have been touring the country to see capital buildings in every state.

"The first one was Arkansas and I picked up a book of all the state capitals at that time and we thought well it'd be a nice thing to do," said Rocker.

The Rockers came all the way from Jefferson City Missouri to see N.H.'s state house and were excited they were able to tour the building on a Saturday.

"It hasn't been available to visitors or residents during weekends when people are off of work....not everybody can take time off during the week to visit the state house but most people are available on weekends to do so," said Timothy Sink, President of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce.

The N.H. state house is one of the state's iconic historical marks. It was built in 1819, and is where most of the important legislature decisions have been made for the past two centuries.

"This is a working museum essentially. It's filled with tremendous amount of history, beautiful artwork...one of the key points of interest is the hall of flags and you can see that when you walk right in. Flags from all the wars that have been fought." said Sink.

People were able to tour the senate and house chambers, these original rooms used from the 1800's are still used today. The funding is raised through the private sector. The program runs for the next three Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The plan is to hopefully open the state house for tours on Saturdays during the summer.
