NASHUA - Olivia Smith was driving south on the Everett Turnpike Friday afternoon when saw a single-car crash and a man hop a barrier and stop in front of her car.
"He got in front of my car and he said, 'Help me! Please, help me,'" Smith said.
That man was 31-year-old Jonathan Calvin of Nashua. Police say he had carjacked the car, crashed it, and then stabbed Smith and stole her car. Calvin led police on a two-state chase in Smith's car, causing an eight-car pile-up on the Everett Turnpike.
"He basically told me if you don't get out of the car, I'll kill you," Smith said. "And he took out a knife and he tried to stab me in other places, but he only got me in my calf."
Calvin left Smith by the side of the bleeding. Police said the eight-car crash he caused sent several other people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash tied up traffic for hours.
"I'm just happy that I'm OK," Smith said. "But I know other people that were also hurt on the highway are not OK, so I'm definitely concerned for those people as well."
Calvin was ejected from Smith's vehicle after the crash and he fought with officers as they tried to arrest him. He was taken to a Boston hospital. Nashua Police plan to charge Calvin with robbery and theft of a vehicle and resisting arrest. State Police are also expected to file charges.
