Somersworth city council member fighting historic monument placement

SOMERSWORTH — A monument of the 10 Commandments, recently re-installed in front of the Somersworth City Hall, is causing unease once again.

A City Councilor, Jennifer Soldati, wants the American Civil Liberties Union of N.H. to help her fight against the monument, which was toppled by vandals in August.

The City Councilor said she believes the placement of the monument violates the separation of church and state.

Others said the monument in considered historic under the establishment clause.

Soldati suggested placing the monument in a local cemetery.

The monument was re-installed on Nov. 6.
