PORTSMOUTH - Three young couples from Oyster River High School are grateful to a stranger whose generosity made their prom night.
The teens had stopped at The District restaurant before the big dance and got a big surprise when an anonymous man placed what looked like a folded $100 bill on the table.
"He said dinner was on him, and it just like brought back memories of his prom," said Porter McManus, one of the students.
Waitress Stephanie Faba got to see their reaction. "They were all like beside themselves, like couldn't even believe it happened," she said.
But that wasn't the only surprise. When they picked up the folded donation, it turned out there were three bills there - more than enough to cover the $180 tab.
"I took a picture of it, posted it on twitter, showed it to all my buddies," McManus said.
The three couples immediately payed it forward.
"I hope the waitress liked her tip, we tried to give her a nice tip with it," he said.
And the waitress? Not surprised
"It's a common occurrence to see people being kind, being kind to one another and paying it forward," Faba said.
Given the cost of tux rentals, dresses and limousines, the students were beyond grateful for this man's act of kindness.
"Prom's expensive, and thank you very much," McManus said.
