Soap star pleads guilty in northeast Ohio crash

JEFFERSON, Ohio (AP) Soap opera actor Freddie Smith has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the car crash that seriously injured his girlfriend in northeast Ohio.

The 26-year-old "Days of Our Lives" actor from Los Angeles lost control of a vehicle Oct. 7 in Ashtabula (ash-tuh-BYOO'-luh) County. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

The Star-Beacon in Ashtabula reports ( ) Smith told a judge he fell asleep because he'd been drinking. His blood-alcohol level was .093, above Ohio's legal limit of .08.

Twenty-seven-year-old actress Alyssa Tabit of North Hollywood, California, was seriously hurt but is recovering. They had returned to Smith's hometown for a wedding.

Smith's attorney said Wednesday that Smith acknowledged in court that he'd made a terrible mistake.

His sentencing is scheduled Feb. 18.
