Sign to direct shoppers to new Wal-Mart erected in the wrong place in Manchester

MANCHESTER - The placement of a sign directing drivers to a new Wal-Mart has proved problematic - some drivers can only see it after they've already passed the exit.

According to the Union Leader, the sign on Interstate 293 is intended to direct drivers to tale Exit 1 to reach a Wal-Mart Supercenter opening on Gold Street on April 20.

Walmart was supposed to get signs erected on I-293 before the Exit 1 approach to tell Walmart shoppers to exit there, according to Barbara Shaw, the alderman for Ward 9, where the store is located.

The Union Leader contacted Wal-Mart but did not get a response on Monday.

The state Department of Transportation does control signs in its right-of-way, but does not have much input on signs off its property, said spokesman Bill Boynton.
