Should schools be making condoms available to middle schoolers?

SAN FRANCISCO — Condoms for sixth graders?

It could happen in San Francisco, according to a Fox News story.

With a similar program already in place in the city's high schools, a school board committee is now considering making condoms available for students as young as sixth grade.

“We believe that with the education, it actually lessens the amount of sexual activity, lessens the amount of sexually transmitted infections as well as pregnancies,” school board member Kevin Gogin said.

Parents are divided on the idea.

“It’s not their call. It’s our call. I think it comes down to the parents,” one opponent said.

But another parent was comfortable with the idea. “If they’re having sex behind their parents’ back, why not be safe about it?”

A recent survey found 5 percent of middle school students say they have had sex.
