Shopping scramble at NH malls ahead of holidays

MANCHESTER - Marking the last weekend ahead of the holidays, parking lots were full and lines were long throughout many Granite State malls.

At the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester things were buzzing on Saturday night.

"It's been very steady. A lot of people shopping," said Mall Manager Jack Toscano. "At this point I think they know what they're here for."

And many knew exactly what they were looking for - as they raced to get their gifts on-time.

"I just bought a train set, one of those one's that goes around the Christmas tree," said Austin Smith.

Smith's friend, Omar Brown, is experiencing his first Christmas in New Hampshire.

"It's different than any place else I have been. It's a thing here," Brown said.

Businesses were thriving - a credit to contributors like good weather, lower gas prices and a better economy, according to Toscano.

"We have one less shopping week this year, but the weather has played a really good role. After Thanksgiving, the weather has been very clear here," he said.

Many malls have extended hours to allow last-minute shoppers to get everything they need ahead of the holidays.
