Sheriffs say man jailed for intoxication found dead in cell

The Associated Press

UNITY (AP) — New Hampshire state and local officials are investigating the death of inmate at the Sullivan County House of Corrections in Unity.

Authorities say 50-year-old Edward Hawkins of Claremont was placed in protective custody Friday at about 3 a.m. after he was picked up by Claremont police responding to a report of an intoxicated man on Broad Street.

The Valley News reports that jail personnel called 911 just after 4 a.m. to report Hawkins was unresponsive. Officials say efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner.

Officials say no further information will be released until autopsy results are in. The investigation by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and the state police is ongoing.
