Shea-Porter tells NH1 News 'I plan to work with' GOP friends in Congress

NH1 News Political Director

CONCORD – Democratic Congresswoman-elect Carol Shea-Porter says “I do have friends on the Republican side and I plan to work with them.”

The former and future U.S. representative from New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District made her comments in an interview with NH1 News this week.

Shea-Porter narrowly edged out incumbent Republican Congressman Frank Guinta last month in a multi-candidate field. It was the fourth straight election the two faced each other. Shea-Porter first won the seat in the 2006 election, defeating GOP incumbent Jeb Bradley. She topped Bradley in the 2008 rematch but lost to Guinta in 2010. She won back her seat in 2012, but Guinta returned the favor in 2014.

When she returns to Capitol Hill next month, Shea-Porter be working in a Washington totally controlled by the GOP. Republicans kept their majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and won back the White House.

But Shea-Porter told NH1 News she can gets things done.

“I do have Republican friends and I do plan to work with them on the issues that we care about that will help the people of New Hampshire,” she said. “We’ll get more done than people think we can as long as Donald Trump is open to that.”

Shea-Porter added that a “majority of the people did vote for a Democratic president. So I think it’s really important that the people feel that their vote was heard and that they also have representation in Washington. So it’s going to be up to the Republicans to make sure that all of the people who came to vote feel that their representative gets a fair shake.”

But Shea-Porter cautioned that “I know they’ll be times that we won’t be able to come together but we’ll have to try.”
