Shaheen, Hassan, ask voter commission to withdraw request
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Democratic New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan have joined 24 senators in demanding that President Donald Trump's commission on election fraud rescind its request that state election officials provide sensitive voter roll data.
Shaheen and Hassan said Friday that the unprecedented request threatens residents' privacy and risks improper removal of eligible voters from voter registration lists in violation of the National Voter Registration Act. They say voting rights are at risk. They say also troubling is the commission's lack of focus on legitimate threats, such as foreign cyberattacks .
On Thursday, a pair of lawmakers and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire filed a lawsuit seeking to block voter information from being sent to the commission.
Secretary of State Bill Gardner, a commission member, plans to submit data that is public under state law: names, addresses, party affiliations and voting histories.
