Several pets killed in Contoocook house fire

Firefighters from several towns battled heavy smoke and flames when they got at a home in Contocook Monday.

"By the time the truck got there there was stuff starting to come out the windows," said neighbor Neil Duval.

While crews battled the flames, neighbors also pitched in to make sure everyone got out safely.

"Nobody could do enough just to help. I was holding a cat that had an oxygen mask on trying to revive it," said neighbor Carla Cassara.

The couple got out safely but a few pets did not. Neighbors say the had to bury a few in the backyard. Throughout the day many stopped by the home to survey the damage and console the family.

"She's a very strong woman. She's probably holding up better than most of us," said Cassara.

"I'm sure it's a tough day for them and our hearts go out to them," said Duval.
