Serve in the military

Six of our former presidents served in the military and three of them reached the highest rank possible as generals.

George Washington
Ulysses S. Grant
Dwight D. Eisenhower

Andrew Jackson, a Major General, also served in the military -- fighting in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 -- before becoming president.

Other presidents with military backgrounds:

Major Zachary Taylor
Major General William Henry Harrison
Jimmy Carter - graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy for seven years
George H.W. Bush - a WWII bomber pilot
