Search continues for 15-year-old swimmer missing in river in Dalton

DALTON - Rescuers have continued to search the Connecticut River for a 15-year-old Vermont boy who disappeared Monday while swimming below the Bridge Street bridge.

Officials have not identified the boy by name, but confirmed he is from Lunenberg, Vt.

Officials said the boy was swimming with his two sisters and three other friends when he disappeared after struggling in swift water at about 5:30 p.m. One of the other swimmers was caught by the same current and had to be pulled to safety by a good Samaritan who heard cries for help.

After making a search of the immediate area, the swimmers and responding neighbors made a call for help, bringing in search personnel from both New Hampshire and Vermont. Search efforts began immediately with searchers combing the river banks and scouring the water through the use of boats and wading.

Searchers worked until 10:30 p.m. Monday but were unsuccessful. Searchers and dive teams from both states will resume the search Tuesday morning.
