Saved from Slaughter: NH woman aims to save some of 100,000+ horses shipped for consumption

NORTHWOOD - 100,000 horses are slaughtered every year for human consumption, that's roughly equal to one every five minutes.

Terri Walker, who owns Good Mood Pet Food in Northwood is trying to change that.

Walker clicked on a Facebook post in early August and was shocked to learn about horses headed to auction to be sold to kill buyers from Canada and Mexico - a practice that is completely legal.

Although it is illegal to slaughter horses in the United States for consumption, it's legal to ship the horses to neighboring countries to slaughter them there.

The horse meat is then sold to other countries for human consumption or put into dog or pet food.

These auctions are all over the United States, but one particular auction in Pennsylvania allows a horse rescue to post pictures of some of the horses online days before the auction to try and sell them to humane buyers.

Buyers cannot see the horses before they purchase them, and the horses are sold "as is". The buyer then needs to arrange for transport.

Walker now has eight horses she has rescued.

She purchased more land so the horses have some room to run, but is behind on her mortgage payments. She says she isn't looking to make money on the horses, she just wants to place them in good homes.

Walker says it's a difficult decision chooses which ones to rescue. "It's hard to pick them out. It's hard to make a decision, because the ones you don't take, are they going be saved?"

Walker recently lost her arm in a car accident, but that doesn't slow her down. "I jumped in with two feet," she said. "I couldn't do it with two hands, but we did do it with two feet."

No specific federal laws currently address horse auctions, but advocacy groups like the Humane Society are working to change that.
