Salem toddler, 2, hit by car driven by 7-year-old sister and airlifted to hospital

SALEM — A 2-year-old was airlifted to a Boston hospital Tuesday night after being hit by a car driven by her 7-year-old sister.

The girls' mother gave the 7-year-old permission to start her car outside their home on South Policy Street in Salem, police said. The girl had shifted the car into reverse, and as it began rolling backwards, the 2-year-old's legs were run over, police said.

Local firefighters responded to the incident at about 6:30 p.m. The 2-year-old was initially taken to Lawrence General Hospital before being airlifted to a Boston hospital.

The toddler suffered non-life threatening injuries to her legs, chin and scalp, along with bruising along her right rib cage and upper arm, police said.

The police are investigating the incident, and do not believe this was a malfunction of the vehicle.
