Salem's finance director facing additional charges for shoplifting from Macy's

SALEM - Prosecutors have filed additional charges against the town's finance director for allegedly stealing clothes at a Macy's.

According to the Union Leader, additional charges have been filed against 48-year-old Jane Savastano, who has served as the town's finance director since March 2005. She was accused of shoplifting on Feb. 19 and police say she also is accused of shoplifting on Feb. 12 at the same store.

According to court documents, Savastano waived her arraignment in court and pleaded "not guilty" to all charges including the most recent.

Prosecutors told the court that they are seeking a potential jail sentence for Savastano. Each of the charges she faces is punishable by up to a year in jail.

Few details were available about the Feb. 12 incident, but police say she stole 11 clothing items worth up to $591 on Feb. 19

She faces two counts of willful concealment and one count of attempted willful concealment.

Savastano remains free on $1,000 cash bail and has been placed on administrative leave from work. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 22.
