Salem police spring into action to save NH man as he attempts to jump from bridge

SALEM — Police officers in New Hampshire saved a suicidal man from jumping off a bridge on Interstate 93.

Responders said a Salem resident called and said that her 24-year-old son had just left their home threatening to jump off a bridge.

Police tracked the man's cell phone to the area of I-93 and Pelham Road.

Upon arrival, Sergeant Joseph Keating said he observed the distraught man sitting on the bridge abutment with his feet hanging off the wall above I-93. He attempted to speak to the man, but he was unresponsive to any questions or attempts to engage him in dialogue, police said.

In fear of the man jumping, Keating approached the man from behind and pulled him backward off the bridge. He then held him to the ground until other officers came over to assist.

Police said the man was very emotional and combative throughout the entire incident.

Officers allegedly shut down the lanes on Pelham Road while state police shut down the right northbound lanes of I-93.
