Saint Anselm's Gavalas, Grayson earn weekly accolades
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. - Sophomore quarterback Yianni Gavalas and junior punter/placekicker Shane Grayson of the Saint Anselm College football team were named the Northeast-10 Offensive Player of the Week and Northeast-10 Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for the period ending Sept. 21, the league announced .
The Hawks rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to knock off Bentley University, 38-34, in their home openerat Grappone Stadium. The Hawks improved to 3-0 (2-0 NE-10) for just the second time, and the first time since 2004 by beating Bentley for the first time in 15 tries.
Gavalas earned the first NE-10 Offensive Player of the Week award of his career as he completed 37 of 49 passes for 386 and two touchdowns. He also ran for two touchdowns. Gavalas, who spread the ball around to five different receivers, put together a nearly perfect second half as he went 21 of 26 for 250 yards and a touchdown, to go along with two more rushing scores and no turnovers, as he orchestrated scoring drives on four of the Hawks' last five possessions to earn the win.
Grayson, who also earned NE-10 Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 8, kicked a 20-yard field goal to put the Hawks ahead in the second quarter and was a perfect 5-for-5 on PATs. Grayson also punted four times for a 32.8-yard average, which included one kick that pinned the Falcons inside the 20-yard line.
