Rye residents learn about the future of their beloved historic town hall
RYE — Residents in the town of Rye have some tough decisions to make about their historic town hall.
In the past few years safety and aesthetic concerns have led officials to consider renovating or rebuilding the structure, which was originally erected in 1839 as a Methodist church.
On Tuesday evening, about 25 people turned out to learn more about their options from a representative who works for Hutter Construction Corporation of New Ipswich. Under the plans for renovation, taxpayers can keep two beloved spiral staircases and a tin ceiling.
Renovations are projected to cost $2.9 million. New construction costs are $3.1 million.
More public hearings will be held next month.
