Rye passenger remains in serious condition after crash where driver fled
RYE — A passenger left at the scene of an accident while the driver ran away remains in serious condition in intensive care at Tufts Medical Center, police said.
According to seacoastonline.com, Michael Barrett, 21, was in the passenger seat and not wearing a seatbelt when driver Cody Lowe, also 21, flipped the car, which then caught fire. Lowe then pulled Barrett from the vehicle and left him "in the middle of the road," according to police Chief Kevin Walsh.
Lowe has been charged with reckless operation and conduct after an accident, both felonies.
The police chief said the area of Rye where the crash occurred is not well lit and Barrett could have "easily been hit by a car."
"A friend doesn't leave a friend behind," the chief said. "I think he knew the police were coming."
An initial investigation indicates speed and alcohol contributed to the crash, he said. Lowe, who is out on bail pending a Dec. 7 court date, suffered only minor injuries in the crash according to Walsh.
