Rollinsford boy battling through brain cancer returns home

ROLLINSFORD - A 10-year-old boy diagnosed with cancer following the discovery of a mass on his brain has returned home after dozens of treatments and 3 different hospital stays.

Levi Whitcomb was diagnosed with brain cancer in April.

After consistent vomiting that resembled food poisoning symptoms, his mother, Jennifer Pepin, brought him for an MRI.

"While we were waiting for the results of the MRI, the doctor called and said that Levi had a mast on his brain and that I had an hour to go home and pack and get everything ready," Pepin said.

The next 3 months would be filled with a surgery on Levi's brain, keeping him unconscious for several weeks, then radiation treatments and relearning how to walk.

“It was a long time in the hospital," said Whitcomb. "I just wanted to come home.”

Whitcomb said he returned home on June 28, the day of his brother's graduation party, and just about a month after his 10th birthday.

He said his friends couldn't have been more thrilled to have him home.

Whitcomb, who also lost hearing in his left ear, has always kept his head high - according to his mom, who has been right beside him through it all, including 31 radiation treatments.

"With as many challenges that Levi has right now, I keep reminding myself that he’s alive," Pepin told NH1, stating that many other children who receive a similar diagnosis sometimes aren't as lucky.

Levi's mother told NH1 News that in just 3 months, his medical bills have exceeded $1 million.

Although the family has insurance, a GoFundMe page has been created to provide extra financial help.

As he got ready for yet another checkup visit to a Boston hospital on Thursday morning, Whitcomb smiled and grabbed his iPad as he headed for the door.

“Just remember the positives," Whitcomb said.
