Sheriff Michael Hureau of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office has put out a warning to the community about a scam which employs a phone number used by the department.
A county resident reported that someone had called with a caller ID displaying (516) 883-1495 - the office's number.
The department said this is a spoof to scare people into releasing money over the phone.
Hureau made it clear in a release that at no time will the Sheriff's request money be delivered to accounts in jail, nor will requests be made for money in lieu of arrests.
All money transactions will be conducted at the Sheriff's Office, Rockingham County Jail, or a local police department if it is legitimate.
Deputies will neither demand money in lieu of arrests, or request the transfer of funds to accounts.
If you are contacted by someone requesting money from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office please call (603) 679-2225 or your local police department.
