Rochester community center to keep 'Red Raider' logo

The Associated Press

ROCHESTER (AP) — After receiving hundreds of emails from students and alumni, officials say a Rochester community center will keep its Red Raider logo, which has received criticism for possibly being offensive to Native Americans.

Mayor T.J. Jean tells Foster's Daily Democrat that support poured in after rumors spread on Friday that the Recreation Department's "R'' logo was going to be replaced.

Officials say work on the gym floor was scheduled, but that there was no talk of altering the logo. The city waxes the gym floor each year, and sometimes repaints decals and court lines.

Jean, an alumnus of Spaulding High School, has been in favor of keeping it, saying it represents pride and respect to Native Americans.
