In December 2013, Robert Dellinger hit and killed Jason Timmons and his pregnant fiancé Amanda Murphy in what he later told investigators was an attempt at suicide.
In February, Dellinger pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and assault in the death of an unborn child.
Wednesday, he appeared in court for the first of a two-day sentencing hearing.
"We need to see justice served," said Skip Spaulding, a family member of Murphy. "It comes down to how much weight the judge puts on human life."
Dellinger pleaded with the judge for a short sentence as he testified in front of family and friends.
"I have to live with what happened for the rest of my life, but please let me serve my sentence so I can return home to my family and begin the healing process," Dellinger said.
