MEDFORD - When you think of strongman competitions, most people think about big burly men.
But, that's not always the case.
Gina Cravedi, a Southern New Hampshire University employee, started an organization in 2012 called New England Women of Strength (N.E.W.S.) which is a community that consists of female strongman athletes.
The organization provides women with the opportunity to share their passion for the sport and build a pathway to help other women join the strongman community.
The organization started with 10 women. There are now more than 1,000 followers.
N.E.W.S. is an organization that, "empowers women that you can do this, that you can stand on your own, that you are stronger than you think emotionally, physically and makes women a lot more comfortable in the body that you are," Cravedi said.
Through the organization, Gina has created a special bond with Dawn D'Norfio - a New Hampshire strongman champion.
Even though they compete against each other, they still hangout and are workout partners.
"I couldn't be more thankful to have this sport and bring each other into each others lives," Cravedi said.
Dawn and Gina most recently finished in the top five in the Granite State strongman competition.
